Nobody wants to hear "new boiler" when the house is cold and the bank account is already bruised. So here is the honest version of how we decide, because we would rather you trusted the advice than bought a boiler you did not need.
Repair it when
- The boiler is under about 10 years old and the fault is a known part: a pressure sensor, a fan, a diverter valve, a thermistor. One part, one visit, back to normal.
- It is the first fault in a long while.
- Parts are still easy to get. For most Worcester, Vaillant, Ideal and Baxi models from the last 12 years they are.
- The heat exchanger is sound. That is the expensive heart of the boiler, and once it goes the sums change.
Start thinking about replacing when
- It is 12 to 15 years old and faults are coming in clusters. Two or three call-outs in a winter cost real money and still leave you with an old boiler.
- The quote for the repair is a big slice of the price of a new boiler. Our rule of thumb: if one repair is more than a third of a replacement, or two repairs in a year add up to that, replacement is usually the better spend.
- It is a non-condensing model (roughly pre-2005, often with a pilot light). These waste 30 to 40p of every pound of gas. A new condensing boiler runs at 90% or better, and on a house using a typical amount of gas that difference is hundreds of pounds a year at 2026 prices.
- Parts are discontinued. Some older Potterton, Glow-worm and Ferroli ranges are now hard to keep going.
- Hot water is the problem: a bath that runs lukewarm, a shower that drops when someone turns a tap on. A correctly sized new combi fixes the symptom as well as the efficiency.
What a new boiler actually gets you
Beyond the gas saving: a manufacturer warranty of 7 to 12 years depending on the model, a new flue, a magnetic filter that keeps sludge out of the new heat exchanger, a system flush, smart or wireless controls if you want them, and the knowledge that the next ten winters are somebody else's problem. We register the warranty for you and give you one written price after a free survey, so there are no extras on the day.
The grey area
If you are somewhere between the two lists, the right move is usually a repair now and a replacement planned for spring or summer, when nobody is in a rush and the price is the same. Tell us your boiler's age, make and the fault code on the display and we will give you a straight answer.
